As a system of personal combat Defense dans la Rue , meaning ‘ defense in the street’ was heavily influenced by the social conditions of the era. Urban violence fuelled by Parisian street gangs, along with the advent of mixed martial art competition was the catalyst for its creation. Historically a selected grouping of combat arts formed the core skill sets of Defense dans la Rue. This in turn provided training elements that covered a number of physical fighting ranges and tactics for the street.
